Hi all. Long post. I posted in the fall about a mom at our school who reached out to husband about an affair and when he immediately rebuffed her and showed me her messages, she did a number of disturbing things. She was adamant that my husband not only sexually wanted her, but was also in love with her. She also messaged me that she saw me trying to hold him back but it wasn’t working. All of this is crazy. We also found out around then that she has significant, violent trauma from her childhood which made her behavior even more disturbing. Her behavior scared our family deeply and we even retained an attorney right after the holidays and looked into a restraining order, but chose to not pursue it because it would really hinder our lives as well. Luckily, after the holidays, the woman and her husband stopped coming to school events and we didn’t have any contact with them for months. Both my husband and I spent hours talking to our therapists this last year about this crazy situation and just recently we both felt like we were finally in decent places.

Over the last 8 months we also told a lot of our friends and a number of people in our school community about her actions and even showed them some her disturbing texts. All have been supportive. It was cathartic to talk about it with others and get their support. One couple (good mutual friends of theirs and ours) even met with her and talked about what happened, letting her know that her behavior was disturbing and telling her that my husband never had any interest in her. She fully pushed back saying she knows my husband has been in love with her for years. She said he never did anything (talk to her, touch her, etc), but she could “sense” and “feel” his love, and that’s what made her reach out to test the waters about having an affair. Again, this whole thing is so nuts and has been so deeply disturbing, but not having any contact with them for months helped and I felt like I was in a good place.

Unfortunately, with the end of the school year, we saw them a bunch these last few weeks (class camp trip, end of school events at school, etc). It was definitely triggering for both my husband and I. We’ve come to realize that this woman and honestly, I think also her husband, are both not well. I also realize they likely aren’t going anywhere and our kids will likely be in school together for a few more years (we’re private so until 8th; kids are just finishing up 5th). As much as we want them out of our lives, we also realize we just need to learn to live with them around. We need to keep our friends close and keep our distance from them. I have never in my life dealt with such a crazy situation. The rest of our lives are pretty mellow and pleasant, so this whole thing is really really hard to wrap my head around. Both sets of our parents have told us at different times that they worry for our safety and that this woman is disturbed, but really, what can we do but just live with it and let people in our community know.

Just sharing to give you guys an update and let you know things are better, and also not better. It’s so disturbing and exhausting to have a woman with mental health issues fixated on your family, and it hard to realize that I think we just need to live with it until they leave our school or do something that gets them kicked out. It really sucks.

My sister’s daughter is 2 1/2 and isn’t talking very much, never makes eye contact and doesn’t ever seem to acknowledge adults in the room that are not her own parents. She interacts minimally with kids without much language. Has a short attention span for play and always runs off quickly and needs to be chased after. The behavior is so different than my own kids. I wonder if she may have autism but my sister has never said a thing about her child’s development and I would never bring it up on my own. Does this sound like early symptoms of autism to parents whose kids are autistic? Or is this just a kid who is different than mine?

Vent/rant. My husband lost his job and has made some financial mistakes in the last year - he’s really been grinding me down. I’ve dreamed of him leaving to visit his family for a while and he finally booked a flight the one effingweek I didn’t organize camp for the kids. I will hire a teen babysitter to help out but I really wish they were in camp so I could have some peace and quiet in my home. But nope not this time. Of course then he gets home and it’s Father’s Day and probably wants the red carpet. Ughhhh

Has anyone here worked with a consulting attorney (doesn’t represent, but advises behind the scenes, reviews documents, etc.) on their divorce? My husband and I are amicable but I also want to make sure we are fair and get everything done right. I had a consult with one attorney and was quoted $7,500 for a retainer. If anyone has names of someone they’ve worked with, I’d be grateful.

The first pimple has arrived! It’s bothering my 13 year old a bit so I am thinking of buying Neutrogena Oil Free Acne Wash as a gentle, basic face cleanser for both of my kids. Is this a good product choice? I think I have a vague memory of using it when I was a tween/teen. I’d really appreciate any recommendations!

I hate that feeling when you’ve tried hard to have a nice family outing/day and everyone is sour and cranky. Makes me feel like not trying and just letting the kids play video games all day. So tired of the constant bickering, negotiating, moodiness etc.

Chalk this one up to borrowing all the trouble, but can’t help but wonder ….

Does anyone worry about future addiction for their kid(s)? Mine has ADHD (constantly craving dopamine), addiction runs in our family, my partner has ADHD (undiagnosed) and does not have the healthiest relationship with substances (primarily weed, also drinks more than one should in mid life), my child has some sneaky social anxiety - doesn’t seem anxious overall but has trouble with sleepovers and other more independent type things - I suspect this is pretty normal for his age but I notice it and think that could also play into addiction down the road.

Anything to be done, outside of honest conversations with them about their increased risk?

If you have a babysitter or other similar type of “helper” who takes public transportation to get to your location, do you pay for the transportation?

Often this is 5 days a week, but it varies week to week. It’s a flexible and informal arrangement and there is no “entity” as the employer - it’s just me, an individual, and the individual person helping me.

I’m sure this varies across many different situations and locations but I’m curious to hear of any examples you can offer from your own experiences. Thanks.

Was just on a 6 hour flight sitting between the two adults caring for an almost-2yo “lap infant”. I was so annoyed with things getting passed back and forth and having less room than usual in the middle seat. Am I already out of touch or was that an asshole move on their part?

How do I convince someone who’s being discriminatory based on adiposity? They think the swim instructor may have a problem and is not able to do the job just based on first impression. There’s no point in being mad or angry. I just want to know how to make changes in people’s perceptions without arguing.

Anyone else struggle to be interested in their spouse’s hobbies/work? My husband has a highly technical job and a handful of hobbies. He regales me with blow by blow details of his work day including technical details that go over my head and shares stories of his hobby time with details that are so niche that I have no idea what he’s talking about. He tells me as though I’m there with him picturing it all. I try to ask questions but more often I just say uh huh or that’s cool or glad you had fun. I give a 30 sec overview of my work day with a funny anecdote or frustrating work thing or I don’t share at all. I find talking about this stuff incredibly boring and I find myself spacing out while he goes on and on. I want to care but I just don’t

We are redoing the kitchen in our new place. There will be some a window over the sink plus a bigger window over a different counter. Options availible to us are single hung, casement (crank) or possibly sliding. What would you do? I already have some menopause shoulder issues... so I'm leaning toward casement. Im worried about having to reach and then lift the single hung.

I’m waiting for someone to confirm but I think that I made the most epic parenting fail.

I booked KOA for next weekend. But I just realized my school trip there is this weekend.

Waiting for my husband to wake up for me to tell him and the child together. Also for the KOA office to open because I think that I might be out $800 dollars.

I turned 46 about a month ago. My period cycle has been 27-30 days pretty consistently for years. My current cycle is now going on Day 40 and there’s no period in sight. I’m also really bloated and carrying a lot of weight in my stomach, but there’s no chance I’m pregnant. Is this peri menopause??

Taking a poll/general vibe. If the doctor is running a little late, would you prefer to have the medical assistant bring you into the exam room on time, take vitals, etc, then have you wait there for 15 minutes until the doctor is ready? Or would you prefer to wait in the waiting room until the doctor is ready for you?

Thoughts on State testing? We got our scores yesterday. My son has orthographic processing aka surface dyslexia so I always take testing with a grain of salt. This year he had all the CASSP testing read to him & he did well on science, math was 1 point below proficient for 5th grade (m but above the state average (he struggles with word problems because of his reading issues) In reading surprise surprise he was below the state average and approaching proficient. He has an IEP and his getting extra support & his scores are trending upward but I’m still struggling to figure out how best to help him. School doesn’t seem concerned but I continue to be…: I want to work with him over the summer but no one seems to be able to tell me how. I have worked with him every summer to avoid summer slide and to try and help him any tips or advise?

Perhaps a dumb question but for 5th grade culmination kids don’t wear leis do they? Is there anything I should be doing for my son? Never been to one & don’t want my kid to feel left out. Following up on this post: https://app.prnthds.co/oAsPbWDDO3b

Now this friend is having her 9yr bday party at Ulta. According to her mom, Ulta salespeople teach the girls about skin care and let them play with whatever make up they want, and then get a hair tinsel. IMO, this is highly inappropriate for a group of 8/9yos. Fortunately, we are out of town and I offered to have the girl over for something special since our child will miss the party (last week mom was saying maybe they’d reschedule the party so my child can attend).

Then I saw this article today! Guess I’m not the only one concerned about this! I want to share this with my group of mom friends but I know all their girls are invited to this party. 🫠

My oldest was supposed to go to a week of sleep away with a school friend and the mom just sent me text that they thought they registered but didn’t. I confirmed multiple times with her she registered her kid before registration for my kid who is shy and not the type to want to go alone. I feel so bad for my kid. We moved so she’s going to a new high school where she knows no one and it’s her first summer not at the camp she’s been going to since she was a rising third grader. Hoping my kid will go and meet someone that is going to her new high school and it will all work out but I just wanted her to have one last week with a friend she’s had for years.

Oof. I dropped my 8 year old off at sleepover camp for the first time. She was so nervous but so brave, and we had a great goodbye. There was a mix-up with her cabin and they had to move her. It makes sense, she was with the wrong age group. But she looks so so sad in the first pic they posted of the new cabin, including her emotional support stuffies that usually only come out at night.

I feel so sad this is her first experience at camp. I emailed them but didn’t hear back yet. Just feeling so sad for her and wishing she had a better first day. She’s there for the week. Just had to get this off my chest :(

Does this sound like menopause fatigue or something else? I have a minor injury that I am starting physical therapy for soon. Most of time, if I don’t move my body the wrong way, I’m fine, but the pain wakes me up between 4:30-6 am daily. I can’t sleep in. It gradually subsides after I’m awake for a bit.

Now, by the afternoon each day, I feel like I need a nap. Just a deep feeling of tiredness. Is this from the pain waking me up or is it another menopause symptom, or both? It’s like I feel I am the most productive for the first half of the day only.

I’m musing about sports for early middle school years. I think I’m looking for support, but also happy to hear the other side of this. I’m sad that as they get older, it gets so intense and that recreational options get less. I played sports through high school, not in the Bay Area, and it was the healthiest thing for my mental health. It’s a great outlet. It is 💯 not recommended on so many levels for kids to specialize this early, and yet unless someone really dedicates themselves, they can’t play competitively, esp for sports that kids are practicing almost all year round. Also, as it gets more competitive, I’m also meeting some seriously competitive parents… I feel like it is not their best light.

I just got a $518 (FIVE HUNDRED!!!) parking ticket because my bumper was a little in the red. Not a tire just like 4 inches of bumper. It said I was blocking an access ramp but I totally wasnt! Also it was issued at 5 am on a Sunday-wtf. And when I went to contest it the citation couldn’t be found. It’s double stressful-what do I do?! Ps this is in SF

If you have been laid off, what have your colleagues said or done that was helpful? This was not a pure economic RIF but rather a performance-driven decision by the manager. I would love any tips on how I can support my former colleague. I can’t offer to be a reference because I did not work closely enough with them but I really like them as a person. I am senior to them but in a different group, so we did not have any kind of direct or indirect reporting relationship.

On a separate note, if you have been in this situation, I am curious if there is anything your direct manager did that was helpful.

Thank you.

Can you please share what bedtime timing/routines look like for your 11yo kids? Bonus points if it takes into account the wearing off of ADHD meds. Thank you!

Background: current routine is one parent reads to him, then other parent comes in to tell stories and we usually start around 9:15. There is tv just before bed but I fear that’s a non-negotiable. Kid is now asking to read a little on his own after being read to, which I’m happy to allow (because yay independent reading). Some nights it works fine, and some nights it’s 10:56 and he’s still awake and stalling. Trying to build his independence and get some non-parenting time back.

Would you say that getting items from your local Buy Nothing group is okay even if you could afford to buy it? I just did an ISO boys pants size 8 and I’m feeling sheepish because I can afford to buy them, but I prefer hand-me-downs. I’m also a frequent gifter on my local group.

Has anyone been to the Petaluma KOA? We have a tent site this weekend and I’m trying to figure out exactly what we need so I can pare down as much as possible. It sounds like the RV sites have a table and chairs. Is there anything other than a fire ring at the tent sites?
